Danny Boys | Canton, Ohio

Like ice cream shops and burger joints, Italian restaurants abound in NE Ohio.  When Danny Boys opened in North Canton last year, I confess, I was far from excited to see yet another Italian restaurant popping up.  So they had probably been open for a few months before I finally got around to stopping in.  Fast forward one year to now, after many visits at different times of the day and night, Danny Boys has completely won me over, for many reasons including their vast menu of delicious Italian dishes.  Having read some rather harsh reviews online, I feel compelled to speak up for Danny Boys.  Not only has it become part of my lunch-time rotation, it’s just an all-around great place to meet, eat, and enjoy a carb-o-licious feast.  So if you’re trying to decide if it’s worth a visit, consider my top five reasons to love Danny Boys: Continue reading

Eadies Fish House | North Canton, Ohio

Hidden away off Whipple on Wise Avenue in North Canton lies a secret treasure, Eadies Fish House.  This was my second trip – first was for lunch, this time for dinner.  Pulling in, I was once again surprised to see quite a crowd, especially for a Wednesday night.  But it’s no wonder really; Eadies has a funky and fun vibe with a great covered patio, that almost looks like it could be on the beach somewhere.  (Yes, some imagination is required.)

Main Street Festival | North Canton, Ohio

This post serves no other purpose than to memorialize what might have been the last of the summer festivals for the year, at least for me anyway.  It was a warm late summer evening – a perfect night for my first trip to Main Street Festival in North Canton.  Next to the food, the best part had to be the collection of Corvettes:

Baker’s Cafe 33 | Canton, Ohio

For the first time in my food-blogging career, we tried out a restaurant that we didn’t know existed, based exclusively on the 97% positive recommendations from Urbanspoon.  And as we happily discovered, if you’re looking for a fantastic steak, then you need to look no further than Baker’s Cafe 33.  Off the beaten path (just south of downtown Canton), Baker’s doesn’t look like too much from the outside, and on the inside is more of the same, but the amazing food and friendly staff explain why it’s been a destination for over 75 years.

Roosters Wings | Canton, Ohio

If there was one Midwest/East Coast culinary tradition that I missed most when living in California, it was wings.  Buffalo wings in Canton Ohio are the sushi of San Diego – they’re everywhere.  As with ice cream stands, everyone seems to have their favorite.  It is my humble, amateur-foodie opinion that Roosters has the best wings around.  Therefore, Rooster’s definitely makes the rotation, especially being Dave’s absolute favorite spot.  But it works out perfectly because I love it too.  Canton also has Quaker Steak & Lube, which is pretty fantastic for wings….that is, until you discover Rooster’s.  And yes, it’s a chain, but a small one, and for some reason feels very local to Canton.  So we frequent the place with reckless abandon.  No better place to relax, eat, drink, and unwind from a hectic day at work.

Milk & Honey | Canton, Ohio

In the spirit of summertime, we can’t mention ice cream without paying homage to Canton tradition, Milk & Honey.  Even as a relative Canton newbie, it’s apparent that Milk & Honey holds a lot of memories for a lot of people.  A hybrid of restaurant, candy shop, ice cream parlor, and old fashioned soda fountain, Milk & Honey covers all the bases by satisfying almost any sweet craving.

Mo’ Joes | Canton, Ohio UPDATE: CLOSED

In the category of quick weekday lunch, Mo’ Joe’s on Hills & Dales in Canton is a great little place for soup, salad, sandwiches, and coffee, as you might have guessed.  It’s perfect for take-out, with reasonable prices, great quality ingredients, and a nice well-rounded menu.  Thankfully Mo’ Joe’s is close enough to my office that I can go at least once a month; it’s in the regular rotation.  They always have “feature” items and specials, so you can try something different every time you go.  Most recently I tried the spinach quiche which was very tasty with lots of cheese and flavor.  Even the crust was yummy.

Barrio | Columbus, Ohio UPDATE: CLOSED

My hands down favorite part of a meal (other than dessert) is the appetizer.  Ordering appetizers instead of dinner is the perfect option for someone completely food-obsessed and indecisive like me.  Why commit to just one thing when you can order many?! That’s why one of my favorite indulgences is a tapas bar, where it’s completely acceptable, expected even, to order a variety of small plates.  So imagine my excitement when I discovered Barrio was within walking distance of our hotel in downtown Columbus.  Score!

Tommy’s Diner | Columbus, Ohio

After checking out some reviews online, we decided to trust the masses and try Tommy’s Diner.  A little off the beaten path and a couple miles west of our hotel downtown, Tommy’s was crawling with people.

As the reviews suggested, Tommy’s has got every detail of the diner vibe covered, from the black-and-white checkered floors to the shiny red vinyl booths.  Even our waitress looked the part with a scarf tied around her head and bright red lipstick.  Love it! Continue reading
