Mulligan’s Pub | Canton, Ohio

There are few culinary creations more satisfying than a delicious bowl of lobster bisque.  It is not often that one has a chance to indulge in lobster, so lobster bisque, while still a luxury, makes the the experience a little more frequently obtainable.  I give full credit to my good friend Melissa for turning me onto it some years ago.  We were at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza in La Jolla, California when Melissa got noticeably excited to see lobster bisque on the menu, (a dead give-away of a true foodie: spontaneous mood change at the mere thought of certain dishes).  While it turned out that Sammy’s bisque fell slightly short for Melissa (she remains partial to Bon Vie in Columbus), all was not lost, because for me, a new obsession was born.  Now, like Melissa, a smile comes to my face when I see lobster bisque on the menu.  And that is one of the main reasons why Mulligan’s Pub in Canton is a must try.

Mulligan’s bisque, a combination of fresh cream, tender lobster, butter, and sherry, is exquisite, but the key to its success (apart from the rich flavor) is the quantity and quality of lobster chunks present in every bowl.  To be frank, they do not skimp on the lobster.  This bowl of bisque is definitely a meal in itself.  When combined with a side salad, dressed with Mulligan’s homemade chunky blue cheese, this is a lunch worth talking about.

I love the dark ambiance at Mulligan’s and the old pub atmosphere.  It is a testament to Mulligan’s history, and their dedication to preserving it through their unique decor, lighting, and furnishings.  If you are interested in all things old and antique, check out the About Us section of their website for details on salvaged materials in the restaurant, including pews turned booths salvaged from a turn-of-the-century church in Pittsburgh, and light fixtures from the Old Polsky’s store in downtown Canton.

Even the dishes and glassware speak to the pub vibe; we enjoyed a delicious, cold Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, served in a frosty mug so heavy you have to hold it with both hands.

I must tell you that pretty much everything at Mulligan’s is delicious.  If lobster bisque isn’t enough for you, you’re sure to find something more your speed on their extensive menu of American pub fare including award-winning BBQ Ribs, steaks, and burgers.
